Quarter Size Glass Plates in Harrington Empire Box

These eigth glass plates were found in an Empire Box sold by Harrington and Co., Ltd., an Australian photographic retailer, with shops in Sydney and Brisbane. The company published the Australian Photographic Journal in 1892-1910 and the Harrington's photographic journal in 1910-1927.

The serial or batch number on the box is 588. There are markings on the box in pencil:

[sic] negetives numbering from 24 to ___

No 2 Box

Please replace each in right order to save trouble

The fact that the photographer consistently misspelled the word negative indicates that he only learned his art practically. The request to keep the order must have been carelessly and repeatedly ignored during the century after the photographer left his note. The numbers on the plates are 15, 29, 31, 30, 26, 18 and 28. This negative of a person in a military uniform does not have a number and seems to come from a different batch.
